Australia is currently transforming its air defense strategy from one of long-range commitment to Southeast Asia to one of more balanced, shorter-range defense of its own shores. Current strength is 22,675 men and 140 combat aircraft. Older Mirage III and F-111 strike aircraft are being supplanted by McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornets.
